Student Action for Refugees

STAR (Student Action for Refugees) is a national network of student groups working to improve the lives of refugees in the UK.

STAR wanted a new web site to help co-ordinate their activites and to improve communication between the different parts of the organisation. They wanted to build up a community and eventually to incorporate a discussion forum, which led me to recommend ExpressionEngine as an appropriate content management system for the web site given its comprehensive built-in membership features.

I developed instructions to enable the STAR staff members to add new content to the various sections of the site and they have worked to build a successful site that binds the STAR community together.

Since the site was launched, it has been regularly updated with new features including:

• An online booking form for the annual conference with PayPal payment facility for collecting registration fees.
• An integrated PayPal shopping cart to sell STAR T-shirts.
• An interactive map of UK-based STAR groups, which uses jQuery to show and hide group labels and information panels as the visitor hovers over and clicks the location markers.
